Laurie Barnes is a Lower Elementary teacher at Crystal Lake Montessori School. She graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor’s degree in English. She attended Northeastern University where she earned a Master of Arts degree in Linguistics. She is certified in Linda Mood-Bell learning processes for reading and comprehension. She earned her Montessori Certificate in Lower Elementary. Laurie’s first teaching assignment was during her time in the Peace Corp. She taught secondary school English Language, Literature and Home Economics in Kenya. Laurie taught English as a Second Language (ESL) at Truman College in Chicago. She was an instructor at McHenry County College in ESL, Citizenship, GED, and Reading. Laurie was instructor of Linguistics at Lake County College. At Motorola Laurie was an instructor of reading and comprehension for employees. During this time Laurie created her own company called Foodworks for the employees of the cafeteria instructing them in ESL. Laurie worked at Reinforcements on the Square in Woodstock individually tutoring and preparing students for SAT and ACT testing. Laurie has been a Montessori teacher since 2000 including four years combined at Pathways in Crystal Lake and Three Oaks in Palatine. Laurie is a true believer in the Montessori way. Her favorite quote of Maria Montessori is: The purpose of life is to obey the hidden command, which ensures harmony among all and creates an ever better world. We are not created only to enjoy the world; we are created in order to evolve the cosmos.
